What Skillshare does well
Skillshare's real strength is breadth at a low cost to sample. One membership opens the whole catalogue, so you can move freely between short classes on many topics without paying for each one, and some of its in-house Originals are genuinely polished. If you like to explore a lot of different subjects casually, and you value variety over keeping any single course, that model suits you well. The clearest reason to choose Skillshare is that appetite for sampling widely across creative and non-creative topics alike.

How a free trial becomes an annual charge
Skillshare is sold as a subscription that starts with a free trial. When the trial ends, the membership converts to a paid plan and the card on file is charged for a full year, and it renews every year after that unless you cancel first. Skillshare's own help center states this plainly:

The gap people get caught by is between meaning to try Skillshare and being signed up for a year of it. Someone who starts a trial and forgets, or who cancels a little too late, can be charged for a full year and notice only when the payment lands on a statement. Buyers describe exactly that:

Yesterday, Skillshare charged my card for a full year's subscription auto-renewal. I have not streamed from, or used Skillshare in over a year. I contacted customer support immediately to explain the oversight, but I am being stonewalled with automated, rigid policy copy-pastes refusing a refund.

Terrible customer service. Don't do a “free trial” if you plan to cancel before payment. They will charge you regardless if you cancel and then refuse to refund you even though you reached out as soon as you realized you were charged.
It is a widely shared experience. If you read the latest one-star reviews of Skillshare, you will likely see many more of the same.
This is one reason Prentora does not use a subscription. There is no trial to forget, no card kept on file for a charge you did not plan, and nothing that renews. You buy a course once, at the price shown on the page, and that is the end of it.
Vetting and quality
Skillshare is not a fully open, upload-anything marketplace. When we checked in July 2026, Skillshare's teacher policies required new teachers to sign up and be approved before they can publish, and a moderation team reviews every new class against Skillshare's content guidelines. That review is real, which is why we still mark curation as partial. The catalogue is very large, though, so how polished any single class turns out to be can still vary quite a lot from one teacher to the next. Independent reviews of Skillshare describe the same gap:

Refunds
Skillshare's refund policy is narrow. Its help center sets out when a refund is possible at all:

In practice that means a refund is only available within 48 hours of the charge on a 7-day trial, only if you have not used Skillshare since, and only once. Trials of 14 days or more are not refundable, and a yearly renewal is never eligible. So someone charged for a year they did not intend, who asks for their money back straight away without having used the service, can still be turned down:

I begged for a refund given I haven't even used their service and that the impact on me financially at this time is severe. They refused and fought every step to extract their money.

Download and keep
Skillshare lets you save classes for offline viewing, but only inside its mobile app, and only while your membership is active. The files are never yours to keep: they stay locked inside the app, and they disappear the moment the subscription ends.
On Prentora, you can download your course videos for personal use and keep them, as well as stream online. Allowing downloads means accepting some risk of piracy. We take that risk: giving paying customers a good experience comes first. There is no DRM, so the files are yours to watch however you like.
Translation and dubbing
Skillshare offers subtitles, which is a genuine plus, but they are automatic captions available on only a limited set of languages, so a class may not be captioned in your language at all. There is no dubbing, so the audio stays in whatever language the teacher speaks and you read along underneath, and the on-screen text and downloadable resources are left untranslated.

I had a problem with the "Transcript" section, as 90% of the time it did not reflect what the teacher was saying. Someone needs to be hired to review transcripts so they make sense.
Prentora includes both subtitles and dubbing in every language we support, in every purchase. Our dubbing and subtitles are produced with a proprietary, layered pipeline that goes well beyond plain machine translation, and every course is reviewed for the kind of meaning errors that make a translation hard to follow. We also translate the downloadable materials that come with a course.
Generative AI
Skillshare sells and promotes classes on making finished art with generative-AI tools. It runs a whole category of them, covering tools like Midjourney, DALL-E and Stable Diffusion.
On Prentora, we exist to help people build real creative skill through human instruction. We use AI only to make human-taught courses available across languages. Prentora does not support the use of generative AI for creative works.
When Skillshare is the better choice
If what you want is to sample many short classes across a wide range of topics, including the business, tech and lifestyle subjects that sit outside creative work, Skillshare's model fits that well. A single membership lets you dip into as much as you like for as long as you keep paying, and breadth is where it wins.
Prentora is smaller and more selective by design. We work alongside our instructors with a focus on the theory of learning, and each course is a back-and-forth process of refinement until it meets our quality standards. Getting a smaller number of courses right is what we care about, and we bring that same focus to the single honest purchase, the translation, and the course you keep.

No. Every Prentora course is a single purchase with no subscription and nothing that auto-renews. Skillshare works the other way around: it is a subscription whose annual plan is charged and renews automatically once the free trial ends.
Can I buy a single Skillshare course without a subscription?
No. Skillshare does not sell courses one by one; access to every class is tied to an active membership. Prentora sells each course individually, so you pay once for the specific course you want.
Do I keep my courses if I stop paying?
On Prentora there is nothing to stop paying: a course you buy is yours permanently, and you can download the videos. On Skillshare, access to every class ends when your membership ends, including anything you saved for offline viewing in the app.
